In the 15 years that I have been helping my clients lose weight by changing their mindset, habits and behaviors around food and eating, I have observed that more than any other influence, our emotions seem to sabotage our eating behavior.

If emotional eating is something you struggle with and it keeps you on the diet roller-coaster, I want to offer you some strategies that you could start to implement so you could change your behaviors and begin to stop emotional eating. The next time you find yourself wandering into the kitchen or thinking about the fast food drive-thru, try implementing these strategies:

5 Strategies to Stop Emotional Eating

Strategy #1
When you “feel like” you want to eat, ask yourself “ AM I HUNGRY”? If you are not, try to figure out what you are really feeling that is making you want to eat. If the feeling isn’t hunger, make a cup of tea, drink some water or brush your teeth. (Believe it or not, this really works!)

Strategy #2
When you want to eat because of how you feel and not because of hunger, use the acronym H.A.L.T. and decide if you are Hungry, Anxious or Angry, Lonely or Tired. Find another way to soothe those feelings rather than through turning to food. And remember: Food won’t ever fix your feelings — and can often leave you feeling worse after a binge!

Strategy #3
Be sure you are pre-pared and pre-planned for all of your meals and snacks. Always have a healthy snack in your bag or your desk so you do not get too hungry and make bad choices. Have food in your home to prepare healthy meals and take a few minutes to look at the restaurant menu online before you go out to eat so you make the better choice before you get to the table. Planning ahead helps you make good choices and if you fear getting hungry, you are prepared.

Strategy  #4
Always remind yourself what you really want. You think you want the pastry in the moment, but what you really want is to lose weight and feel better about yourself. Also remember WHY you are telling yourself no. If you remember your why it will feel less punishing. Dropping a few pounds and feeling good about yourself will last longer and taste better than the pastry. Trust me on this!

Strategy #5
Each morning when you start your day, spend some time thinking about staying mindful in regard to your choices and what you really want for yourself. Any time you eat, you choose what goes in your mouth. Practice asking yourself “Why would I choose to eat something that makes me feel bad longer than it makes me feel good”? When you make choices that make you feel good, it prevents that voice in your head that says “I’ve blown it so I may as well keep going”.

The fact is, when you learn how to honor your hunger and learn how to get comfortable feeling your feelings, you will feel better both physically and emotionally and set yourself up for long-term success.

As we all know, the season of Pumpkin Spice Everything (including PSLs — the now famous Pumpkin Spice Lattes) is upon us. People familiar with Just Stop Eating So Much! know that as someone who’s lost over 250 pounds of excess weight and kept it off for over a decade, I’m a big fan of moderation vs. depravation. But for anyone needing a reason to limit the amount of PSLs and/or sugar-filled autumn-themed coffee drinks, here’s a meme revealing what your body (and health) go through when you consume this type of a beverage.

Are you a fan of PSLs or another “fall in a cup” coffee drink? How often do you allow yourself to have them? Are you addicted like I can sometimes be? Do tell in the comments section below. And, in the meantime, enjoy in healthy portions and (again) in moderation! Cheers!

Those who know me will tell you I’m a big caffeine addict. Granted, I treat caffeine (in the form of coffee) with the same regard I treat all food and drink in my life: With moderation. But “Back in the day,” having coffee meant having a whole lotta cream and sugar with it. Actually, way back when (or weigh back when, as I like to say), I would drink coffee with artificial sweetener and artificial, nonfat creamer. The thought of consuming these totally unnatural, chemically altered substances make me shudder today.

As I learned more about health and nutrition, I gave those artificial substances up when drinking coffee. And I replaced them with real sugar (Sugar in the Raw was my choice) and real cream (Half N’ Half in this case). You might be surprised to read about the sugar and Half N’ Half. But based on how my body metabolized these more natural substances, I knew they were better for me than the artificial “fat and calorie free” crap (key word) that I’d been using up until then.

OneSmallChange.

But wait. There’s more.

Having succeeded with my “Small change, big reward” theory with the artificial sweetener and cream, there was a day I decided to take it one step further. Thus, I gave up the cream and sugar entirely and, instead, started to drink my coffee au natural (AKA “Black”). This took some getting used to because I like my coffee strong and bold. So the first couple sips of black coffee would elicit the kind of facial expressions that not even graduates of clown colleges could make.

But eventually? I got used the taste of black coffee. And – surprise, surprise – I even began to prefer the taste of black coffee. I liked how the flavor worked in tandem with my morning cereal or toast (never overwhelming the taste of breakfast and never being overly sweet like a milkshake). Another small change. Not to mention another big reward in that I had reduced my calorie intake by no longer having cream and sugar with my coffee.

For a time, I would allow myself to have cream and sugar on special occasions. At first only on weekends. Then only on special occasions (like my birthday). But eventually? I went all black coffee, all the time. And since then, I’ve never looked back. Although I do still occasionally make the ridiculous clown faces during the first, somewhat bitter sips. But I’ve learned to enjoy that moment for what it’s worth, figuring these ‘facial exercises’ might be burning up a few  additional calories.

The great thing about small changes is that once you’ve successfully achieved them and made them part of your life, they will start to affect other decisions. For example, if I’m running around town and have to grab breakfast on the run, if I’m getting a black coffee I don’t want to completely negate that healthy choice by having a donut with it and instead will opt for a bran muffin or piece of fruit. Again, everything in moderation.

Now, I’m not telling you to join me on the black coffee bandwagon. But I’m am suggesting you look at different areas of your life and see where there might be room for one small change. Accomplishing that change could affect the rest of your life – and perhaps your health – in a positive, beautiful way.

When I first heard about Dunkin’ Donuts new glazed donut breakfast sandwich, I thought it was some kind of joke — until I came across countless news stories, all of which also called into question the company’s unleashing this sugar- and fat-laden breakfast sandwich that some might potentially nickname “The pre heart-attack special.”

According to the CBS affiliate in Boston, the sandwich (which comes with fried eggs and bacon squeezed between a split glazed donut) clocks in at 360 calories, which (as pointed out by CBS Boston) is ironically less than the 390-calorie turkey sausage sandwich that Dunkin’ Donuts recently introduced for people looking for healthier menu options.

Becoming part of Dunkin’ Donuts regular menu as of June 7th (National Donut Day to those in the know), many ponder the audacity of the company (based in Canton, Massachusetts) introducing such a decadent entry given the nation’s recent push toward food options that make for healthier choices.

Remember, breakfast is about “breaking the fast” between dinner and a good night’s sleep. Healthy breakfast foods are meant to give us energy and help invigorate us as we start our day — not make us want to take a nap or (worse yet) contribute to clogging our arteries.

When visiting the Dunkin’ Donuts website, I read that, according to Chef San Frankethaler, “Based on all of the buzz and positive responses we received during testing, we knew we wanted to offer this nationwide and to be able to give it to our guests just in time for National Donut Day. The Glazed Donut Breakfast Sandwich was able to move fairly quickly because we are using ingredients that are currently on our menu. We had to train our crew members on constructing the sandwich — slicing the donut, adding the fried egg and bacon.”

Um… Okay…

So upon further analysis, yes — the glazed donut breakfast sandwich does seem to be some kind of a joke. Only problem is, if we’re buying and consuming breakfast items like this, the joke just might be on us (not to mention on our health).
