One early morning while sucking down my coffee like it was oxygen, I looked out of my kitchen window, down into the courtyard of the apartment building across the way. I noticed a man placing a box with a small plant into the sunlight. At first, I assumed he was doing some gardening. But then noticed he left the box in the sunlight and had walked away. Upon further examination (AKA “not minding my own business and staring out the window”), I saw that the small plant was actually a beautifully maintained Bonsai Tree.
A few days later, I saw the same man once again placing the box with the Bonsai into the sunlight, then leaving it there for a couple hours. I now deducted that after allowing it to soak up some Vitamin D, this man then takes his carefully cared for plant back into his home. (Who says I couldn’t run a detective agency?)
Seeing this man take care of his Bonsai Tree (which is clearly thriving) from time to time warms my heart—and it’s a sight I look forward to seeing when I’m lucky enough to notice this ritual in motion. Whether witnessing the man placing the tree into the sunlight or even just seeing the tree already in its spot fills my heart with joy. This man’s beautiful ritual reminds me of the level of care I need to make sure I’m giving to myself. And this is also the same level of care you might want to be giving to yourself, as well.
When we care for something, it thrives. This can be seen in my neighbor’s Bonsai Tree or even in the happiness level of my dog, Latte. It’s therefore important that we give the same kind of love and care to ourselves—as well as our health-minded goals. This might initially seem like common sense. But often, when we discuss our goals with others, we frame things in the negative: “I haven’t been able to do this” or “I am such a loser when it comes to that.”
When people I know tell me they need to lose weight, I can often detect a degree of self-loathing in their tone. I can relate—knowing how much I hated myself when I weighed over 450 pounds.
This disdain for ourselves is an approach we’ve been taught is beneficial and will likely facilitate change. The thinking being, “You hate how you look, so do something about it.” But after learning to love myself at any size (both before and after I took off 250 pounds of excess weight), I am grateful to pass along what I’ve learned. If we actually love and care for ourselves — even as we are now in this very moment (no matter how many pounds overweight or how far from any goal)—we become more likely to encounter faster success.
If you know a good friend or family member that’s facing a challenge, you want to help them. But if it’s someone you have distaste for, you don’t really care if they succeed in their quest or not. Well, time for you to think of yourself in a more affectionate way and afford yourself the very same degree of care that my neighbor gives his Bonsai Tree or that I give my dog.
Do something kind for yourself today—throughout this day and everyday. And remind yourself why you’re a supermodel (which, for the record, you are). Suddenly, if you’re wanting to lose weight or reach any goal you’ve set out for yourself (health-related or otherwise), you’re doing it because you care, not because you’re disgusted. That’s going to make the journey a lot more pleasant and, I imagine, a lot more successful.
Just like my neighbor’s Bonsai Tree, it’s time for you to position yourself in the warm sunlight of tender loving care—and thrive.

A brand new week is upon us. And for those of us with a dieter’s mentality, that often means it’s time to continue with and/or recommit to your dieting and healthy eating efforts. But what’s your take on this decision? Do you dread days like this? Do you long for a life without rice cakes? Are you angry that you can’t begin your day with a Triple-Super-Duper-High-Sugar-Latte? Are you starting your week with a mental spanking? Or do you realize what a wonderful gift you’re giving yourself by choosing (key word) to eat, live and be healthier?
Fact of the matter is that dieting does not have to equal torture. And yet often, many of us have gotten used to approaching our need to shed some excess weight with a “The glass is half empty” attitude – almost as if we’re being punished. Or, worse yet, like we deserve to be punished.
Well, let me be the first to tell you that this kind of “I’m a loser” attitude does not actually help you to be a loser. In fact, the opposite attitude offers you and your weight loss goals a greater chance of success. And the good news is that this doesn’t have to require repeated trips to a therapist and/or a shock therapy lab. You can simply decide – right at this very moment – to flip your mental switch and see your glass as half full (even if it is half full of skim milk instead of a milk shake).
Again, the key word here is CHOICE. Try keeping this word in the forefront of your mind today and, perhaps, every day this week – even if you have to write the word on a post it note and put it on your bathroom mirror, computer, dashboard (or whatever) to do so.
You are choosing to get healthier.
You are choosing to fit into jeans with a smaller waist.
You are choosing to exercise so that you can be healthy enough to walk across the room or even run a marathon without risking a medical malady.
You are choosing to show the world that you are in control.
And it’s going to be a lot tougher to reach these amazing and worthwhile goals if you’re down on yourself or see your plight as one filled with angst, torture and depression.
If you loathe rice cakes (or whatever kind of food), don’t include them in your eating plan. And if you’re craving carbs, then find a balanced (and healthy) eating program that allows for whole grains and other foods from all 4 food groups. You are in control here. Dieting doesn’t have to be about ‘lack.’ It doesn’t have to be about ‘can’t.’ Instead, it can be about ‘This tastes good and I feel good – and this journey to better health that I’ve chosen is worth it.’ Why? Because you’re worth it.
Take it from someone who used to weigh over 450 pounds – and now weighs around 175 pounds (and has stayed at that weight for over a decade). I loved food then. I love food now. And yes, even I am constantly having to recommit to my overall goals of healthy eating and maintaining a healthy weight. (Whose post it note do you think I took a picture of, above, anyway?) And guess what? I do it without rice cakes. And (mostly) without self-torture.
No more mental anguish, people. This healthier life is a choice. And the age old saying is true, ‘Nothing tastes as good as being thin feels.’
So out with the old (tortured) attitude and in with the new (supermodel) one. And yes, that’s what you are. A supermodel. Right in this very moment. And you can tell anyone who questions your supermodel-dom, that I said you’re one – and I mean it.
Again, you are in control. And you are amazing. So let’s all have a kick-ass week together, shall we?

Repeat after me: You. Are. Amazing! In fact, you are perfect in this very moment. No matter what wonderful, life-changing goals you might have set out for yourself.
You can accomplish those goals. Trust me… You can. But you’re likely to accomplish said goals a lot faster (and while being a lot happier) if you think of yourself and speak of yourself as a friend, rather than someone you detest.
Your brain hears you. Your mind hears you. The world hears you. So let the world and, more important, yourself hear the news: You are the most incredible, most beautiful, most fabulous person ever! And yeah… A supermodel! (Believe it!)

No matter what you think, you are perfect in this moment. Yes, you — you specifically!
And yes, perfection can accomplish change — but change is more likely when the want comes from a positive place of loving yourself. When I was able to finally take off over 250 pounds of excess weight, it was because I was loving myself in the “now.” When I hated myself, I just kept getting bigger and unhealthier. When I started looking in the mirror and seeing myself as a friend (and as terrific in the moment), real change started to occur. So next time you look in the mirror, remember that you are a supermodel. (True story!)

When people ask what I do for a living and I tell them I’m a supermodel, I’m only half kidding. Sure, they chuckle — especially when learning that I’m actually a screenwriter who works behind the cameras rather than in front of them. But if I happen to share that I took off over 250 pounds of excess weight over a decade ago and have kept it off ever since, they then start to notice my model-like swagger. After all, as someone who used to wear a size 60” belt (as long as I am tall), I never thought that I’d be able to fit into and wear clothing that wasn’t purchased at one of those Big and Tall stores. So now that I do, I’m only too happy to strut my stuff — no runway required.
And I’ve got news for you. You’re just as much of a supermodel as I am. Perhaps even more so.
Before moving to Los Angeles, I worked in the fashion industry as both a copywriter and art director. This gave me the opportunity to work with real life models and supermodels — most of whom were surprisingly human. When working in New York City with some of the biggest names in the biz (at the time), I weighed in excess of 400 pounds. You can only imagine the heads that turned when I would walk into a meeting to discuss some designer’s latest clothing line. I was the extra-large square peg trying to fit into the fashion industry’s round hole. But being from the other side (the real world side), I was determined to find out the secrets that these creatures of beauties knew, but that they didn’t seem to be sharing with the rest of us.
To my surprise, most professional models (the ones who wanted a lasting career at least) were pretty darned normal. They put on their pants one leg at a time. They got irritated when their hair didn’t turn out the way they wanted it to. And they also (surprise-surprise!) were conscious of what types of foods and how much of these foods they were eating (all the good things we learn about here and on other helpful websites like joybauer.com).
Sure, there was the occasional girl (an industry term not a sexist one, I assure you) who didn’t have to think twice about what she ate. But most models were careful about their food choices and portion sizes. And it’s while working with them that I began to pick up strategies that would help me eventually shed the 250+ pounds of my excess weight once and for all.
But my initial fascination with supermodels aside, I eventually began to realize that everyone around me was a supermodel in their own right. No matter if they were flying to Milan or trying to get the kids to school on time, everyone had agendas, everyone had schedules. Sometimes they met them. Sometimes they didn’t. But the real champs (whether appearing in magazine ads or not) carried themselves with grace at all times. And yes, I would even see this kind of grace in friends selecting vegetables while at the grocery store or picking random bits of baby food out of their hair after feeding time.
No matter what we do (or are trying to do) for a living, aren’t we all rockstars? (Oops. Sorry. I’ll try and stick to one analogy here.) But hopefully you’re starting to get my drift.
We’re all on life’s runway and all strutting our stuff. We have good days. We have challenging ones. But we’re making life work as best we can. And it’s when we throw our shoulders back, walk with proper posture and keep the right attitude that we can achieve even greater successes. This is true whether we’re trying to take off some excess weight, working to find that dream job or even simply meeting friends for coffee. We are all supermodels. And the sooner we own that, the more easily we can shift into carrying ourselves with a little more self-confidence — the kind of self-confidence that can help us meet all of our goals (even if said goals are going to take a little time).
So now the answer to the question posed in the headline of this piece… Did you know you’re a supermodel? Because, without question, you are one. And yes, with this proclamation, I’m giving you permission to work it however you see fit. As you scan this blog for your next favorite recipe, some fun snack food ideas or tips for looking your best, own your goals. Own your challenges. But also own your star quality… And make it shine.
