Do you find yourself repeating negative habits and behaviors when it comes to emotional eating and yo-yo dieting? Do you find you set an intention to get healthy and by the end of the day or week you always “do yourself in?” This is self-sabotage showing up.

What is Self-Sabotage?

Self- Sabotage is any behavior, thought, emotion or  action that holds you back from getting what you consciously want – as well as the conflict that exists between conscious desires and unconscious wants that manifest in self-limiting patterns of behavior. It’s usually rooted in lack of self-esteem and self-worth.

All of us sabotage ourselves at some point . We say we want something and then we do the opposite that prevents us from getting what we want. Not only can self-sabotage prevent you from getting what you want but its also a safety mechanism from disappointment. This safety mechanism keeps you in your comfort zone. This can be especially true for those of us with a dieter’s mentality. We talk about wanting to initiate positive change that will lead to a healthier body weight. The only problem is that we are sometimes talking about this while bingeing on fries or other foods in portion sizes that don’t serve the goals we’re saying we want to achieve.

We usually sabotage ourselves because we have trouble mastering our emotions. So if you are an emotional eater, you use food as a coping mechanism to deal with your emotions.

What does self-sabotage look like?

  • Succumbing to fear of failure
  • Not taking action if we think we can’t do it perfectly
  • Not planning ahead
  • Not considering the consequences of your actions
  • Incessant worrying
  • Allowing your inner critic to take charge
  • Always complaining or being the victim
  • Focusing on what’s not working vs what is
  • Always making excuses

Can you overcome self-sabotage?

Good news… The answer is yes! The whole reason I created The MindShift Method was to help lifelong dieters stop self-sabotage, lose their excess weight for good and change their lives for the better. After all, what good is looking great if we’re not feeling great?

If you’ve been telling yourself “I should be able to lose weight on my own” but you haven’t been able to, self-sabotage might be getting in the way. Or, if you keep beating yourself up because you promised yourself that your latest food binge was going to be the last one ever, but it never really is the last one, this is another example of self-sabotage that might be creating mental roadblocks on your wellness journey.

Getting past self-sabotage comes down to changing your mindset. Instead of being your own worst enemy, you want to become your very best friend. This might sound like it’s simplifying things. In a way it is. But I also understand that beating the negative voice (along with the negative habits) isn’t always easy. This is why I work with my clients to create tools that they can turn to any time self-sabotage threatens their goals.

I’m generally not a fan of diet-related fasting of any kind. However, when I read this quote from Yoko Ono, I was suddenly very much in favor of this kind of fast. A fast from negativity about our own selves.

Doing this might seem easy at first. But try getting through even just one hour without being negative about yourself or your body (in your own head). It’s surprising how often I’m reminded that my most “vocal” critic is actually that little voice inside my head. Can anyone else relate to this? I imagine the answer is, “Yes.”

So why not try and ignore that little voice? The one that tells you your body’s not perfect? Or the one that tells you you’re not lovable? Or the one that says you should be further ahead in your career? Whatever kind of negativity your mind is offering about yourself, ignore it. Try to shut that voice down. And this includes shutting down actual talking out loud about ourselves (in a negative fashion). I can’t tell you how many times I’ve complained about my body or my so-called “failures” to friends and family (often making myself a punchline).

What we say to and about ourselves matters. We hear it. We feel it. It becomes part of our psychological makeup on every level. So it only make sense that changing that “voice” from negative-speak to positive-speak would have a healthy (and happy) impact on our lives.

So why not join me in taking Yoko Ono’s good advice? If doing it for three days seems like too much, try doing it for just an hour, and then build upon it from there. The psyche you save may be your own.

(And remember: no matter what your health-minded goals are, you are beautiful and perfect in this very moment! The sooner you recognize this, the sooner any kind of goals can be achieved!)

Keeping Excess Weight Off JustStopEatingSoMuch.com

Why do you think sustainable weight loss eludes you?  You’re smart, savvy and you know what healthy is and what it’s not. You’ve probably read a million books and articles on eating healthy for weight loss. You have all of the information.  So how is it you know what to do but you just can’t do it??

Your struggle with weight just drains you. You wrack your brain wondering why the weight just won’t come off no matter what you do. You have tried every trick in the book. You lose weight but over time the weight slowly comes back on. Or maybe for you it quickly comes back.

What do you think that’s all about? Lack of motivation? Lack of willpower? Laziness?

I want to let you know its not any of those things. It’s about your self-defeating behaviors.

What exactly are self-defeating behaviors? Actions or attitudes stemming from faulty or limited beliefs that once worked to help us cope with hurtful experiences, but now they prevent us from responding to life in healthy ways.

These behaviors lead us to make choices in all aspects of our life, health, work, relationships etc that perpetuate cycles of failure. Samples of this include: My metabolism is broken so why should I try? Nothing works for me. I am destined to be overweight. No matter what I do the weight will come back. I’m afraid to fail again… Do any of these sound Familiar?

It is your self-defeating behaviors and faulty beliefs that keep you stuck in your struggle with food, weight loss, relationships and anything else you haven’t been able to sustainably change in your life.

This is why the weight always comes back. Because all you’ve done is focus on changing the food. You’ve haven’t yet addressed the “Why.”

You can continue to try every diet on the planet but unless you change what you believe about yourself and the behaviors that follow…the weight will always come back.

Close your eyes for a few seconds and imagine what it would feel like to continuously replace self-defeating behaviors with life-enhancing behaviors. You continuously make choices that make you feel good, happy and proud. Imagine how that would feel? Pretty darn good, right? Well, I want to let you know this is possible.

I want to let you know that by learning the right tools and strategies you can change your self-defeating behaviors to new, habitual life-enhancing behaviors so you can overcome your struggle with food and lose the weight for good.

After all, you know its never really about the food. It’s about changing the habits, behaviors and your old coping mechanism that causes you to eat to soothe your feelings with food. Don’t let anything — or anyone (not even yourself) — introduce the word “can’t” into your psyche. No matter where you’re at in your life, no matter what you might be facing, this moment is the perfect time to press the “start” key in regard to loving yourself, getting healthier, reaching for your goals — you name it. Never forget that you’re worth it. And yes, you can tell anyone who might disagree that I said you definitely are worth it. (No sh*t! I truly believe in you!)

So whatever small, medium or giant step you might be facing today… Take it!
